Gone, Beanie, Gone is a Disenchantment comic first published in "Disenchantment: Untold Tales Vol. 3".
Chronology[]
The bulk of the story is set before the start of the series as it shows an event from Bean’s early teens. The story is told by present-day Bean, but it is unclear at what point in the show this framing device is set as Bean, Elfo and Luci are the only main characters to appear.
Plot[]
Part 1: It ain’t easy being Bean[]
Bean, Elfo and Luci are in a bar, telling stories about their past. When it’s Beans turn she recalls how she once switched places with a pauper for a year and King Zøg never noticed.
The story then flashes back to six years ago. A young bean overhears her father play with Prince Derek, during which he claims Bean will never inherit the throne and only serves to get married off for more land and power. Distraught, bean retreats to her room. Bunty tries to cheer her up by telling Bean a story about a knight who was send by his king to find a Golden Chalice. The knight searched for many years, but never found the chalice. Upon returning home empty handed, he found the kingdom in ruins. Disheartened, the knight eventually passed away, but with a smile on his face knowing he had given everything to loyally serve his king.
Inspired by the story, Bean decides to find the chalice and bring it home for her father. She cuts her hair and dyes it black, and dons different clothes as a disguise. Then she leaves the castle. She quickly finds herself in trouble however when her rucksack is stolen by a street urchin and she is forced to spend the night outside. The following day, Bean is found by a pink haired girl named Hilda who thinks Bean was trespassing on her territory. However, she decides Bean could be of use to her. The two team up to rob the Plague Doctor.
The theft goes well and forms the start of a long partnership between the two girls where they pull various cons and robberies. While Bean is away, Bunty asks Miri to impersonate her so the king won’t notice. Months later, when Hilda proposes to rob the king, Bean realize to her shock that she has been wasting her time. She tries to return to the castle but the guards won’t let her because they don’t believe she is truly Bean. Bean thus resumes her original to find the golden chalice.
Part 2: Quest for Sire[]
After days of traveling, Bean passes out from hunger and is found by a farmer and his wife. They take her to their home and feed her, but claim they know nothing about the golden chalice. That night Bean continues her journey.
Weeks later, she arrives at the castle of Sir Gourmand. He is intrigued by Bean’s story about the golden chalice, but declares he wants it for himself and has Bean thrown in the dungeon. She manages to escape however when the castle is attacked by an enemy army.
Bean resumes her journey, and after many perils she eventually finds the house of a hermit. He makes her realize that chasing the golden chalice is pointless, and that Bean should ask herself if she is truly seeking her father’s happiness or her own.
Bean thus returns to Dreamland, where she seeks out Bunty. Bunty admits the story of the golden chalice was just that; a story. She and Stan smuggle Bean back into the castle, where Bean resumes her place as princess and Miri is kicked out. Life continues as normal, though Bean is annoyed that no-one but Derek noticed she was gone for a year. Then one day Bean finds out that Hilda is now working in the castle too along with two new accomplices.
Part 3: Since you Bean gone[]
Queen Oona finds out her strand of bog pearls has been stolen. Zøg has Odval and Sorcerio question the castle staff. An innocent man is pointed out as the culprit and taken to the dungeon. The real thieves are Hilda and her allies. Hilda scolds her mooks for stealing the pearls as they are supposed to focus on stealing things that won’t be missed quickly, and determines they should make their final move tonight.
Bean overhears them and tries to warn Odval, but he is certain they caught the thief already and there’s no danger. That night, Bean is not hungry due to knowing what is going to happen, and excuses herself from the table. As she leaves the dining room, she bumps into Hilda, who finally recognizes her as her old friend.
That evening, Hilda and her allies lock Bean in her room, tie up Odval, and begin to loot the castle. Bean however escapes through the window, and frees Odval. They find all the treasure Hilda had already stolen hidden in the castle’s pantry. Bean quickly switches the bags with the loot for bags containing potatoes. Hilda and her allies fail to notice this until they have already left the castle.
The following day, during dinner, Zøg chokes on a piece of meat and Bean saves him. Afterwards she gives him a drink. The grateful Zøg finally shows his gratitude towards Bean, and as Bean looks at the wooden chalice she offered her father, she realizes she succeeded in her quest after all.
That concludes the story. Luci however is skeptical and calls Bean a liar. Enraged, Bean leaves the tavern while Elfo tells her he does believe her. As the three friends leave, Miri begins to recall to some other patrons in the bar how she once replaced a princess for a year.
