Chronology[]
Since other Elves besides Elfo are seen living in Dreamland, the story is set after “The Very Thing”. At the same time, Zøg in this story still has a full head of hair and shows no signs of his madness, plus Sir Pendergast is still alive, placing the story before “The Electric Princess”.
Plot[]
Bean, Elfo and Luci are walking through Dreamland, but Bean is having a rough day. She gets splashed by mud twice when a carriage drives through a puddle next to her, and keeps bumping into signs. She laments why such bad luck always has to befall her, and begins to fear she might be cursed. Then Sir Pendergast arrives to tell Bean she has a guest waiting for her at the castle.
The guest turns out to be Hagatha the Gloomy, a Fairy who was supposed to attend Beans christening and thus become her fairy godmother, but never showed up. Hagatha claims she was never invited, but King Zøg denies. Hagatha has come to tell Bean that, after supposedly not being invited, she cursed Bean with humility and obstacles to overcome.
Hagatha leveas, and Bean falls into a depression by this revelation. Luci thus suggests that they try to break the curse, or at least make Bean think it has been broken. They first ask Sorcerio for help but none of his solutions work. Next they try the Plague Doctor in the Apothecary, where Bean gets hit by a curse amplifier powder. Next they ask Gwen, who tells Bean only the godmother can undo the curse she put on Bean.
The three friends locate some fairies in Dreamland to ask about Hagatha’s whereabouts. Sagatha tells them Hagatha has an office in the Dark Business District of the Enchanted Forest. Along the way there, Bean keeps suffering misfortune after misfortune. Eventually they find Hagatha in her office, and Bean begs her to remove the curse. Only for Hagatha to reveal that the curse has already expired; it only lasted for the first 16 years of Bean’s life, and Bean is now 19, so she’s been curse-free for 3 years already. Hagatha has no idea what is causing all Bean’s bad luck, but it’s not her curse anymore.
The three friends return to Dreamland, with Luci and Elfo trying to cheer up Bean, who now thinks her whole life is just one big failure. Just when it seems they get through to her, Bean gets splashed with mud again. Luci thinks maybe Bean was born under a bad sign.
